Serra da Canastra Circuit – Minas Gerais

Birthplace of Brazil's great river

Difficult

The Serra da Canastra Circuit loops through the rugged highlands of western Minas Gerais, where the São Francisco River begins as a trickle from a spring before becoming Brazil’s fourth-longest waterway. This route combines dirt ranch roads and 4WD tracks through cerrado savanna and gallery forests, passing massive waterfalls like Casca d’Anta—a 186-meter drop that thunders into a canyon carved from ancient quartzite. The circuit includes multiple creek crossings and rocky technical sections that demand low-range work, especially during the wet season when streams turn into torrents.

This is solid intermediate territory that requires genuine 4WD capability and rock sliders for the technical creek beds. Dry season (May to September) offers the best conditions, though some crossings remain challenging year-round. No permits needed for most sections, but some private ranch roads require permission from landowners. Bring recovery gear and extra fuel—the nearest services are hours away in São Roque de Minas. What you earn is some of Brazil’s wildest remaining cerrado, excellent camping beside crystal streams, and the rare chance to see maned wolves and giant anteaters in their native habitat.
