Serra da Canastra Diamond Mining Circuit Minas Gerais
Colonial diamond mining trails through cerrado highlands
Deep in Minas Gerais, this 180-kilometer circuit follows colonial-era mining tracks through the Serra da Canastra, birthplace of the São Francisco River and site of Brazil’s first major diamond strikes in 1729. The route connects abandoned garimpeiro settlements like Sacramento and Delfinópolis, passing through the dramatic Casca d’Anta waterfall where the São Francisco plunges 186 meters off the plateau. Stone foundations of Portuguese mining camps remain visible along creek beds that once yielded some of the world’s finest diamonds.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicle for rocky creek crossings and steep escarpment climbs, though stock 4WD handles most sections in dry conditions. Best tackled April through October when rivers are fordable — avoid December through March when flash floods turn gentle streams into torrents. Fuel available in São Roque de Minas, carry water and camping gear as remote stretches offer no services. This route rewards travelers with authentic Brazilian mining history, spectacular cerrado landscapes, and some of the country’s best wildlife viewing in relatively unknown territory.
