Estrada do Ouro Minas Gerais Serra da Moeda Circuit

Colonial gold route through mountain mining country

Moderate

The Serra da Moeda gold trail cuts through the heart of Brazil’s colonial mining region, following ancient mule paths that carried fortunes from the hills to Rio de Janeiro. This technical route connects forgotten mining camps like Jeceaba and Congonhas through steep mountain terrain, crossing the Rio Paraopeba multiple times on sketchy concrete fords that flood during rainy season. The road climbs to 1,400 meters through eucalyptus plantations and remnant Atlantic forest, passing abandoned smelting operations and stone churches from the 1700s.

Expect moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with good approach angles for the river crossings and loose rock climbs. Best tackled April through September when water levels drop and roads firm up. Fuel up in Conselheiro Lafaiete – there’s nothing reliable between towns. The reward is stepping into Brazil’s gold rush history while navigating genuinely challenging mountain terrain that most tourists never see.
