Richtersveld Trans-Frontier Circuit

Desert wilderness at world's end

Extreme

The Richtersveld forms Africa’s last true wilderness frontier, where the Orange River cuts through desert mountains at the Namibian border and ancient Nama settlements dot landscapes that resemble Mars more than Earth. This multi-day circuit winds through the Richtersveld National Park and cross-border conservation area, passing bizarre succulent forests, moon-like granite domes, and hot springs at Kuboes. The route includes technical river crossings, steep rocky climbs through the Hellskloof Pass, and navigation challenges across unmarked desert tracks where GPS is essential.

Extreme remoteness demands expert-level preparation — this isn’t weekend warrior territory. Self-sufficient overlanding with high-clearance 4WDs, comprehensive recovery gear, satellite communication, and 5+ days of water and food is mandatory. Best tackled May through September when temperatures won’t kill you. Park permits required for both sides of the border, plus passport for Namibia crossing. No fuel, water, or supplies available once you’re in — the nearest civilization is Alexander Bay, 200+ kilometers away. What you get is pristine desert solitude, incredible star-filled nights, and the satisfaction of completing one of southern Africa’s most challenging overland routes.
