Ruby East Humboldt Range Traverse

This high-altitude traverse cuts across the Ruby Mountains’ eastern flank, linking Island Lake with the remote Humboldt drainage via passes that top 9,000 feet. The route follows old sheepherder trails and mining roads through aspen groves and alpine meadows that feel more like Montana than Nevada. Overland Pass marks the technical crux – a loose scree crossing that separates committed drivers from day-trippers looking for easy scenery.

Expert difficulty due to extreme remoteness, technical rock sections, and weather exposure above treeline. Modified 4WD with good approach/departure angles essential, plus full recovery gear and survival equipment. July through September only, with early season snow possible into June. No permits required but inform someone of your route – cell service vanishes once you leave the valley floor. You’ll experience Nevada’s most spectacular alpine country, complete with glacial lakes and peaks that scrape 11,000 feet, in country most Nevadans don’t know exists.
