Monongahela National Forest Seneca Creek Backcountry Circuit

High country views beyond the tourist zones

Moderate

This backcountry loop starts at the base of Seneca Rocks and winds through the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area on forest service roads that few tourists ever see. The route climbs through dense hardwood forest to exposed ridgelines offering panoramic views of the Potomac Highlands, passing remnants of old fire towers and logging camps. Key challenge comes at Bear Hunter Trail junction where loose shale and exposed bedrock demand careful line choice and momentum management.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for rocky climbs and rutted descents, though most stock trucks can handle it with careful driving. Summer months offer the best conditions, but fall colors make this spectacular. No permits required for the forest roads, but dispersed camping follows Leave No Trace principles. Fuel up in Franklin – it’s 60+ miles of mountain driving. You’ll earn views that stretch to Dolly Sods and a real taste of West Virginia’s wild high country without the Seneca Rocks crowds.
