Lost River Gorge Technical Loop

Underground river gorge technical challenge

Expert

Lost River earns its name by disappearing underground for miles through Hardy County’s limestone karst, and this technical loop follows the gorge where the river briefly resurfaces before vanishing again. The route drops into McCauley’s Cave area via a steep, loose limestone descent that’s claimed more than one bumper, then follows the underground river’s path through a maze of sinkholes and exposed bedrock. At Trout Pond Recreation Area, you’ll tackle the infamous “Devil’s Backbone” – a knife-edge limestone ridge with exposure on both sides that requires precise wheel placement.

This is expert territory that demands full armor, recovery gear, and an experienced spotter. The limestone gets slick as glass when wet, and the narrow passages between car-sized boulders leave zero room for error. Absolutely impassable during winter and early spring when the underground river floods the lower sections. Summer is best when water levels drop. No official camping in the gorge itself, but Trout Pond campground makes a good base. This isn’t about getting from A to B—it’s about threading the needle through one of Appalachia’s wildest geological puzzles.
