Dolly Sods Bear Rocks Dispersed Camping
This rugged camping area sits at 4,000 feet elevation among massive sandstone boulders and heath barrens that feel more like northern Canada than West Virginia. Multiple primitive sites scatter among the rocks, each offering privacy and dramatic sunrise views across the Canaan Valley. The terrain is a unique ecosystem of stunted spruce, mountain laurel, and open meadows dotted with bear-sized boulders that give the area its name.
Access requires navigating Forest Road 75, a rough dirt track that can be muddy and rutted, especially after rain. The area sees heavy use during fall foliage season and can fill up on weekends. No water or facilities—pack everything in and out. Weather changes rapidly at this elevation, with potential for snow even in summer.
