Canyonlands Maze District — Flint Trail to Doll House

Utah's hardest gate into its wildest canyon.

Expert

The Maze District earns its reputation before you ever reach the canyon floor. The Flint Trail is the gatekeeper — a 4-mile, 1,400-foot descent on a shelf road cut into near-vertical sandstone, with switchbacks tight enough to require a three-point turn in a full-size rig. At the bottom, the world opens into labyrinthine canyon country: the Doll House spires, Chimney Rock, and the confluence overlook of the Green and Colorado rivers are the payoff. It’s legitimately one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth, and you’ll see almost nobody because getting here is that hard.

This is expert-level terrain, full stop. Short-wheelbase, high-clearance 4WD with good lockers and a skid plate setup. Stock long-wheelbase trucks have gotten stuck on the Flint Trail switchbacks — know your rig’s dimensions before you commit. A backcountry permit from the NPS is required year-round and must be reserved well in advance. Carry 3-4 days of water and all fuel — the nearest gas is Hans Flat Ranger Station road, 46 miles of dirt from the trailhead. Best season is March-May and September-October. Satellite communication essential.
