Forest Road 45 Seneca Rocks Backcountry Loop

Limestone ledges beneath Seneca's towering spires

Difficult

Forest Road 45 snakes along the base of Seneca Rocks’ famous limestone spires, following old fire roads and logging tracks that date back to the Civilian Conservation Corps era. The trail winds through rugged Appalachian terrain where rock crawling meets mountain views — you’ll navigate limestone ledges and boulder fields while the iconic 900-foot rock formation towers overhead. Judy Gap marks the technical midpoint, where loose shale and steep grades separate casual drivers from serious four-wheelers.

This difficult trail requires experienced drivers with modified 4WD vehicles — rock sliders and skid plates are essential for the limestone shelves. Weather can turn this route treacherous; avoid during wet conditions when shale becomes slippery as ice. The 12-mile loop takes 4-6 hours, with spectacular photo opportunities at multiple overlooks. Spring wildflowers and fall colors make the challenging drive worth every scraped skid plate, but come prepared for a real workout in some of the Mountain State’s most demanding terrain.
