Spruce Knob Lake Campground

High-elevation USFS campground near the highest peak in West Virginia, base camp for Spruce Knob exploration.

Sits at 3,800 feet elevation around a small mountain lake, offering 43 sites in a mixed hardwood and spruce forest. Clean vault toilets, hand-pump water, and fire rings at each site. Popular with families during summer weekends, but quieter mid-week. No hookups—this is old-school Forest Service camping.

Access via paved WV-28 then Forest Road 112. The road is good gravel, suitable for any vehicle. Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring Spruce Knob’s summit trails and backcountry roads. Open typically May through October.
