Hole in the Mountain Peak Trail
Technical alpine summit with natural rock arch
Hole in the Mountain Peak stands as one of Nevada’s most distinctive summits, crowned by a natural rock arch visible from the valley floor 6,000 feet below. This demanding route climbs through the Ruby Mountains via steep, rocky terrain past Lamoille Lake, gaining over 4,000 feet of elevation through alpine meadows and granite outcroppings before reaching the iconic hole formation that gives the peak its name.
This expert-level trail requires a capable 4WD vehicle with low range, skid plates, and aggressive tires for the initial approach, followed by technical hiking with mountaineering experience recommended. July through September offers the only reliable weather window, as snow blocks access much of the year. No permits needed, but parking is limited at the Lamoille Canyon trailhead. Expect a full day commitment with incredible alpine scenery—this is Nevada’s answer to the Sierra Nevada, minus the crowds.
