Hells Canyon Rim Trail Oregon Side

This brutal rim road follows the Oregon side of Hells Canyon, where the Snake River cuts the deepest gorge in North America 7,993 feet below your tires. The route starts near Hat Point and follows old cattle trails and fire roads along knife-edge ridges, passing the ruins of McGraw Creek Lookout and dropping into sketchy ravines where one wrong turn means a thousand-foot tumble. The Saddle Creek descent is particularly gnarly — loose shale switchbacks that’ll test your nerves and your brakes.

Expert-level difficulty due to extreme exposure, loose surfaces, and complete isolation. High-clearance 4WD with skid plates, recovery gear, and winch strongly recommended. Carry multiple spare tires and extra fuel — nearest services are 80+ miles away in Enterprise. Best attempted June through September when weather’s stable. No permits required but notify someone of your plans. Water sources are virtually nonexistent, so pack everything you need. The payoff: views into the canyon that’ll make your knees weak and bragging rights few overlanders earn.
