Savage Gulf Technical Rim Circuit

Rim-running technical challenge above deep gorges

Expert

Savage Gulf’s rim roads aren’t for the faint of heart — they trace the edge of Tennessee’s version of the Grand Canyon through technical sandstone shelves and exposed rock faces that’ll test your spotting skills. The circuit connects Stone Door, Savage Falls, and Alum Ford via a network of unmaintained roads that require careful navigation around house-sized boulders and across slickrock sections. The challenge peaks at Collins Gulf overlook, where you’ll edge along a knife-edge ridge with 800-foot drops on both sides.

This is expert-level terrain demanding lockers, skid plates, and a spotter for the technical sections. Rock slabs get dangerously slippery when wet, making dry conditions essential. No camping allowed within the natural area, but dispersed sites exist in the adjacent Savage Gulf State Forest. Fuel up in Tracy City before starting — it’s a long way between gas stations. The payoff is accessing overlooks that most hikers never reach, with views across the Cumberland Plateau that stretch to the horizon.
