Fall Creek Falls Backcountry Circuit
Cumberland Plateau's hidden waterfall circuit.
Fall Creek Falls State Park’s backcountry road network opens up Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau beyond the crowded tourist areas. This 15-mile circuit starts from the main park road and follows old logging grades and fire roads to remote overlooks above Cane Creek Gorge. The highlight comes at mile 8 where an unmarked spur leads to a spectacular viewpoint above 256-foot Fall Creek Falls from the opposite rim – a perspective most visitors never see.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for rocky sections and seasonal mud holes. Stock trucks handle it fine outside of wet periods, but the narrow shelf roads demand attention and a steady hand. Best run spring through fall when weather cooperates. Park permits cover backcountry access, and several primitive camping areas along the plateau provide excellent overnight options. Cell service is spotty but improves near the main falls area. Bring plenty of water as reliable sources are scarce on the plateau.
