Sichuan–Tibet Highway — Derong to Deqin via Benzilan and the Lancang River Canyon

The G214 between Derong and Deqin is the kind of road that reminds you the planet doesn’t care about your schedule. Dropping into the Lancang River (upper Mekong) gorge and hauling back out repeatedly, this corridor runs along crumbling shale cliffs where the road is barely wider than a truck and the drop to the river can exceed 600 meters. At Benzilan, the road threads past Tibetan farming villages and the Benzilan Monastery before climbing toward the Baima Snow Mountain pass above 4,200m. This is the Yunnan approach to Deqin — and on clear days you earn a view of Kawagarbo, the sacred 6,740m peak of Meili Snow Mountain.
The road is nominally paved but landslides, washouts, and ice close sections regularly — especially in spring and after summer rains. A capable AWD or 4WD is strongly recommended; heavy trucks and buses navigate it, but that’s not a comfort when the cliff edge is a foot from your wheel. Altitude sickness is real above 3,500m — acclimatize in Shangri-La before pushing north. Foreign travelers require a Tibet Travel Permit for some sections beyond Deqin; check current regulations. A capable stock AWD SUV can get through in dry conditions, but the road surface is unpredictable — loose gravel, rockfall debris, and washed-out sections are common. A high-clearance 4WD with a low-range option gives you real margin on the shelf road's worst segments. Don't attempt this in a standard sedan or crossover.

Winter brings ice and snow above 12,000 ft, and the highest sections near the Yunnan-Tibet border can close without notice from November through April. September to November is the safest window — roads are drier and visibility is best before the high passes get socked in.

Oncoming trucks are a constant reality, and passing situations on blind corners require patience and precise vehicle control.
How far is the nearest reliable fuel stop, and is there anywhere to camp along the route?
Benzilan has a fuel station and it's your best bet mid-route — don't count on anything between there and Deqin being open or having what you need. Dispersed camping in the gorge is limited by terrain; most people overnight in Benzilan or push through to Deqin, where guesthouses are basic but available.
