Macetown Road

21 river crossings to Otago's ghost town

Expert

The Macetown Road follows the Arrow River through some of Central Otago’s most unforgiving terrain, crossing the river 21 times on the 16km journey to the abandoned gold mining settlement. Built in the 1860s to service the Macetown goldfields, this track demands serious 4WD skills as you negotiate boulder-strewn river crossings, steep rock steps, and narrow gorge sections where one wrong move puts you in the drink. The final approach to Macetown ruins involves a particularly sketchy river crossing that claims vehicles every season.

This is expert-level territory requiring a capable 4WD with good ground clearance, recovery gear, and preferably a second vehicle. Best attempted in summer when river levels are low, though flash floods can turn crossings deadly within hours. No permits required but inform someone of your plans — cell coverage is non-existent in the gorge. The payoff is exploring genuine ghost town ruins and some of the South Island’s most dramatic alpine scenery, but respect this route or it’ll bite you hard.
