Eldorado Creek FSR to Champion Lakes
Silver district mining road to mountain lakes
Eldorado Creek FSR climbs through dense old-growth cedar and hemlock forests where mining crews once hauled ore from the Champion Lakes silver district in the early 1900s. The route follows Eldorado Creek’s drainage north from Highway 3A, passing weathered mine tailings and rusted equipment scattered along the creek bed, before switchbacking up granite ridges toward the alpine basin holding Champion Lakes.
This is a moderate technical route requiring high-clearance 4WD for the final 8 kilometers of loose rock and water bars. Summer through early fall offers the best conditions, though snow can linger at elevation until July. No permits needed, but fuel up in Grand Forks — the nearest station is 45 minutes away. Primitive camping available at the lakes, and the fishing for rainbow trout makes the rocky climb worthwhile.
