Kelso Dunes Road
Singing sands accessed via railroad grade.
The old Kelso Dunes Road cuts through classic Mojave Desert terrain from Kelso Depot to the base of the singing sand dunes. This 3-mile dirt track follows portions of the historic Union Pacific Railroad grade, winding through dense Joshua tree forests and crossing several desert washes. The road dead-ends at a parking area where the real adventure begins—a steep hike up 650-foot sand dunes that ‘sing’ when conditions are right, creating an otherworldly humming sound.
Stock 4WD vehicles with high clearance handle this route easily during dry conditions, but flash floods can wash out creek crossings overnight. Best tackled October through April when temperatures stay reasonable. No permits required, but bring plenty of water—the nearest services are 34 miles away in Baker. The payoff is camping under some of the darkest skies in California and experiencing one of the desert’s strangest acoustic phenomena.
