Mojave National Preserve Cima Dome Dispersed Area
This elevated plateau camping sits within the world’s largest Joshua tree forest, scattered around the base of the symmetrical volcanic dome. Sites are tucked between ancient Joshua trees and desert scrub at 4,200 feet elevation, offering cooler temperatures than surrounding desert. The dome itself provides a distinctive landmark visible for miles. Fire rings are present at established sites but no water or facilities.
Access via Cima Road (paved) then short dirt spurs to camping areas. Roads are generally passenger-car accessible when dry but can be muddy and impassable after winter rains. Popular with photographers during wildflower blooms and stargazers year-round. Joshua trees are protected — don’t damage them for firewood.
