Providence Mountains State Recreation Area
This isolated 5,900-acre park sits high in the Providence Mountains at 4,300 feet elevation, offering cooler temperatures and expansive views across the eastern Mojave Desert. The centerpiece is Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve, featuring impressive limestone formations in a series of connected caves. The park also provides access to hiking trails through Joshua tree forests and desert washes, with panoramic overlooks of the surrounding basins and distant mountain ranges.
The park is reached via a steep, winding mountain road that climbs 2,000 feet from the desert floor. The access road is paved but narrow with sharp curves — not recommended for large RVs or trailers. Cave tours are offered seasonally when staff is available. The area can be completely closed during extreme weather or budget constraints, so verify status before making the drive up.
