Fort Piute
Ruins of a frontier military outpost built in 1867 to protect mail routes and travelers crossing the Mojave Desert. What’s left are crumbling adobe walls and stone foundations scattered across a small rise, with interpretive signs telling the story of this remote garrison that lasted less than a decade. The fort protected the old government road between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, back when crossing this stretch of desert meant risking your life to Mojave raiders and the elements.
The site sits in Mojave National Preserve, accessible via a short walk from the Mojave Road. It’s a haunting reminder of how brutal this country was for early travelers — makes you appreciate your 4WD and GPS when you’re out here. Piute Spring is nearby, though the water isn’t reliable anymore. Mid Hills Campground is about 10 miles south if you need a legal spot to sleep, or you can find dispersed camping on BLM land along the way.
