Hole in the Wall Formation
This bizarre volcanic formation looks like Swiss cheese made of red rock — countless holes and caverns pockmark the cliff face, created when gas bubbles formed in cooling lava millions of years ago. A short 1.5-mile loop trail leads through the formations, passing slot canyons, natural arches, and caves big enough to crawl into. The rock is rough volcanic tuff, so wear good boots and watch your hands. Views from the top take in the entire Mojave National Preserve.
The trailhead is right off Black Canyon Road, about 10 miles north of the main Mojave Road route. There’s a visitor information station at the parking area and a nearby campground if you want to stay the night. The trail can get crowded on weekends, especially in winter when the desert weather is perfect. Early morning light makes the red rock formations pop.
