Piute Spring — Mojave Road Historic Water Source and Campsite

Point of Interest

Piute Spring sits at the eastern end of the Mojave Road near the mouth of Piute Gorge, and it’s been keeping people and animals alive out here since long before trucks existed. The spring feeds a small seep surrounded by desert willow and cottonwood — a green smear in an otherwise bone-dry stretch of the East Mojave. Fort Piute ruins sit just above, adding a layer of history that makes this one of the most loaded stops on the entire route. Water is present most of the year but should be treated before drinking.

Access is via the Mojave Road from the east — a rough dirt track requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially through Piute Wash. Sand and rock ledges demand proper tire pressure management. BLM Needles Field Office manages the area. No facilities. Cell service is essentially zero out here. Run it with a full tank and a recovery kit.
