Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve

Point of Interest

These limestone caves burrow deep into the Providence Mountains, featuring three main chambers connected by narrow passages and decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations. The 90-minute guided tour covers about a half-mile underground, including the impressive Big Room with its 50-foot ceiling. Temperatures stay around 65°F year-round, making it a cool refuge from desert heat.

Access requires a steep, winding 1.5-mile drive up Wild Horse Canyon Road from Essex Road — doable in any vehicle but nerve-wracking for big rigs. Tours run Friday through Monday from September through May, advance reservations required. The visitor center and picnic area offer shade and restrooms but no water. Cell service is nonexistent up here.
