Providence Mountains State Recreation Area — Mitchell Caverns Campground
Sitting at around 4,300 feet in the Providence Mountains, this California State Parks campground gives you a cooler, elevated perch compared to the valley floor. Six developed sites with tables and fire rings, vault toilets on-site. The surrounding desert is quiet and dramatic — limestone peaks, barrel cactus, and sweeping views toward the Mojave Preserve. It’s close enough to the eastern Mojave Road corridor that you can stage here, run the trail, and be back before dark if you move early.
Access is off Essex Road — paved all the way in, so any rig can reach it. The campground is small and fills up on holiday weekends, especially in spring when the desert is blooming. Mitchell Caverns tours depart from here when staffed — check California State Parks ahead of time since ranger-led tours have been intermittent in recent years. Cell signal is minimal. Water availability is seasonal — confirm before you arrive.
High-desert base in the Providence Mountains.
