Lava Tube Mojave National Preserve
This quarter-mile lava tube formed when volcanic flows created a natural underground tunnel system. The main tube is wide enough to walk through comfortably with a headlamp, offering cool respite from desert heat. Multiple entrance points dot the landscape, with the main access being the most developed and safest for exploration.
Located along Kelso-Cima Road about 10 miles north of Kelso Depot. The unmarked parking area sits on the east side of the paved road. Short quarter-mile walk across desert terrain leads to the main entrance. Bring multiple light sources — it gets pitch black inside. Best explored during cooler months when desert hiking is more comfortable.
