Desert Research Institute Kelso Dunes Weather Station
This automated weather station sits on a small rise overlooking the main Kelso Dune complex, accessed via a rough 4WD track that branches north from Kelbaker Road about 3 miles east of the main dunes parking area. The station itself is a cluster of white instruments and solar panels surrounded by creosote and scattered Joshua trees, with spectacular views across the singing dunes to the Granite Mountains.
The access road is deep sand in places and requires momentum — aired-down tires recommended. No facilities here, just the station and 360-degree desert views. Popular with photographers chasing sunrise light on the dunes without the crowds at the main trailhead.
