Government Holes Natural Spring Complex
Government Holes represents one of the most important water sources along the historic Mojave Road, a series of natural rock tanks and springs that sustained travelers from Native American traders to military expeditions to pioneer wagon trains. The main springs flow year-round into granite catchments surrounded by barrel cactus and desert ironwood, creating a genuine oasis in the harsh East Mojave landscape. Stone ruins from an old ranching operation and military survey camp scatter the area.
Located roughly halfway along the modern Mojave Road trail, the springs sit about 0.3 miles off the main track via a sandy wash approach. High-clearance 4WD recommended for the final approach, though the walk from the main road isn’t bad. Water quality varies seasonally — filter and treat before drinking. The area sees moderate use from Mojave Road runners but remains relatively pristine.
