BLM Mojave National Preserve Kelso Dunes Dispersed Area
Scattered sites across flat desert scrub at the base of the 650-foot Kelso Dunes, offering some of the darkest night skies in Southern California. Most spots accommodate any size rig with plenty of room to spread out, though soft sand requires awareness of where you park. Popular with astronomers and photographers chasing the “singing sand” effect when dunes are disturbed. Campfires permitted in metal containers, but bring your own wood.
Access via Kelso Dunes Road, a well-maintained dirt road suitable for any vehicle. Winter and spring offer the best weather, while summer temperatures can exceed 110°F. No facilities whatsoever — pack out everything and bring plenty of water. The area can get busy during wildflower blooms and cool-weather weekends.
