Mojave National Preserve Lava Tube

This natural lava tube was formed thousands of years ago when molten lava flowed beneath a hardened surface crust, leaving behind a hollow tunnel system when the lava drained away. The main tube extends roughly 500 feet underground with a fairly level floor and ceiling heights ranging from 4 to 15 feet. The cave maintains a constant cool temperature year-round, making it a welcome respite from desert heat. Multiple headlamps and sturdy boots are essential as the floor is uneven volcanic rock.

The tube entrance is located along Aiken Mine Road, roughly 10 miles north of Kelso Depot. The dirt road is suitable for most vehicles but can be sandy in spots. No developed trail leads to the entrance—look for the obvious dark opening in the volcanic hillside. The cave is completely dark beyond the entrance, and visitors should bring multiple light sources and inform others of their plans before entering.
