Mojave Cross Sunrise Rock
Sunrise Rock stands as a 5,590-foot granite prominence in the Mojave National Preserve, historically known as the site of the Mojave Memorial Cross erected in 1934 to honor WWI veterans. The cross itself was removed and relocated due to legal challenges, but the rocky summit remains a powerful viewpoint overlooking the Providence Mountains, Kelso Dunes, and endless Mojave basin country. A moderate 1.5-mile scramble from the Cima Road leads to the summit through Joshua tree woodland.
Access via rough dirt roads requires high-clearance vehicles, especially the final approach to informal parking areas. The area sees very little traffic outside of occasional memorial visits and desert hikers. No facilities, shade, or water — come prepared for full sun exposure and carry plenty of water for the climb.
