The Gibb River Road punches east from Derby across the Kimberley Plateau, threading between the King Leopold Ranges and the Cockburn Range before dropping into Kununurra — 700 km of corrugated red dirt that has humbled more than a few ill-prepared rigs. The gorges are the draw: Windjana, Bell, Manning, Adcock, Galvans. At Pentecost River crossing, depth markers matter — get it wrong and you’re swimming. Manning Gorge requires a boat across the lagoon to reach the falls. Mitchell Plateau is a two-hour detour north on the Kalumburu Road that almost nobody skips once they’ve seen the photos.
This is genuine remote outback driving. Run-flat tyres, two full-size spares, a snatch block, and a quality UHF radio are non-negotiable. The road is graded dirt — sometimes corrugated to teeth-rattling — and creek crossings vary wildly by season. High-clearance 4WD minimum; lifted and loaded is smarter. Best season is dry: May through October. The road closes entirely in the wet. Fuel at Derby, Imintji, Mount Barnett, and Kununurra — carry 80–100 litres for side trips.
