Windjana Gorge Campground — Windjana Gorge National Park
This is the real deal. Windjana Gorge Campground sits a short walk from one of the Kimberley’s most dramatic limestone gorges — 3.5 km of sheer Devonian reef walls rising 90 metres off the Lennard River. Freshwater crocs are everywhere in the pools; wallabies and fruit bats own the evening air. The campground has basic facilities: flushing toilets, cold-water taps, and a dump point. It fills fast over peak dry season (June–August), so arrive early or book ahead through the DBCA. Powered sites are not available — it’s tent and swag territory with some hardstand pads for camper trailers.
Access is via the Fairfield-Leopold Downs Road, a graded dirt road roughly 145 km east of Derby — passable for most 4WDs and well-set-up camper trailers in dry season. After rain that road turns to clay and becomes impassable. No fuel within the park — top up at Derby or Fitzroy Crossing before you head in. Flies will own your face. Bring a head net.
