Gibb River Road Dispersed Camping (Kimberley, WA)

The Gibb River Road through the Kimberley region of Western Australia is one of the most iconic overland routes in the country. Between Derby and Kununurra, dispersed bush camping is possible at numerous river crossings, gorge pullouts, and station boundaries. The landscape is dramatic — bloodwood eucalypts, red escarpments, boab trees, and crystal gorge pools. Most informal camps sit on unallocated Crown land or station pastoral leases; always check if you’re crossing private station land. Expect dust, heat, and spectacular solitude. No facilities at dispersed sites.

The road is typically open May through October — wet season closures are total and non-negotiable. River crossings can be axle-deep or impassable depending on recent rain even in the dry season. High-clearance 4WD is minimum; a snorkel is highly recommended. Fuel is available at El Questro, Home Valley, and Imintji — gaps between stops can exceed 200km. Carry your own water at all times.
