Gibb River Road — King Leopold Ranges Gorge Creek Flat Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

This is classic Kimberley dispersed camping — a wide, sandy creek flat beneath a canopy of paperbarks and pandanus, flanked by the red sandstone walls of the King Leopold Ranges. No facilities, no signs, no crowds mid-week. You’re sharing the bush with rock wallabies and the occasional wedge-tail. Fire restrictions apply during the dry season and can change without notice — check with the Derby Shire or DBCA before lighting up. Bring everything in and take everything out.

Access is off the Gibb River Road between Derby and the Imintji Community. A high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended once you drop onto the creek flat — loose rock and sand make it technical at low tyre pressures. Best visited May through September when creek levels are low and the track is passable. Cell service is essentially zero out here. Plan accordingly.
