Lennard River Gorge — King Leopold Ranges Viewpoint
The Lennard River punches through the King Leopold Ranges in a canyon of banded red and orange sandstone that’ll stop you mid-drive. From the road-accessible viewpoint above the gorge, you’re looking down into layered Precambrian rock that predates most of Earth’s complex life — ancient doesn’t cover it. The gorge is wide, deep, and remote enough that you’ll often have it to yourself outside peak season. No facilities, no crowds, no fuss — just the Kimberley doing what it does best.
Access is off Gibb River Road, approximately 200km east of Derby. The turn-off to the gorge rim is rough dirt and requires high-clearance at minimum. Dry season only — July and August are the sweet spot. The Lennard River can flood spectacularly in the Wet, cutting off access entirely and transforming the gorge floor into a raging torrent. Don’t attempt in or around wet season.
