Natchez Trace State Forest Forest Road 165 Indian Creek Trestle Loop
Creek fords under a century-old railroad trestle
This loop cuts through the rolling hardwood forests of western Tennessee, anchored by the dramatic Indian Creek railroad trestle crossing from the old Illinois Central line. The route follows Forest Road 165 through mature oak-hickory stands before dropping down to ford Indian Creek at three different points, including one crossing directly beneath the towering steel trestle that’s been weathering here since 1908. The creek crossings range from ankle-deep riffles in dry months to knee-deep torrents during spring runoff, with loose gravel approaches that’ll test your traction control.
This is solid intermediate territory — stock 4WD handles it fine in dry conditions, but the creek approaches get slick when wet and the limestone shelves can hang up low vehicles. Best run April through October when water levels stay reasonable. No permits required since it’s state forest land, but you’ll want to check creek levels after heavy rains. Dispersed camping allowed along the ridges. It’s a perfect Tennessee hill country sampler that delivers history, water features, and decent technical challenge without requiring rock crawling skills.
