Lakeview to Warner Mountains — Drake Peak Lookout Road

Oregon's forgotten high desert summit lookout run.

Moderate

Most overlanders running the Oregon Outback blow through Lakeview on US-395 without looking east — and that’s their loss. The Drake Peak Lookout Road climbs northeast from Lakeview into the Warner Mountains through sagebrush steppe that transitions to ponderosa pine and then into open subalpine meadows near the 8,405-foot summit. The historic Drake Peak Fire Lookout sits on the high point, staffed intermittently in summer, and delivers a 360-degree view that takes in Goose Lake to the southwest, the Abert Rim to the north, and Nevada’s Great Basin stretching east to the horizon. The road passes through Fremont-Winema National Forest on a combination of maintained gravel and rougher two-track that tests clearance on the upper switchbacks.

This is a high-clearance route rather than a technical crawl — a capable stock 4WD with all-terrain tires handles it fine in dry conditions. The road surface deteriorates noticeably above 7,000 feet with embedded rock and erosion channels that punish low-clearance rigs. Snow closes the upper route well into June and returns by October; July through September is the reliable window. No permits required. Lakeview is your fuel and supply stop — don’t leave town running low. Cell service drops to nothing above the first ridge. Dispersed camping is available throughout the Fremont-Winema sections and the summit area is worth an overnight just for the stars.
