Lakeview to Plush Back Country Byway
Historic freight road through Warner Valley
This 54-mile gravel and dirt road follows the historic freight route that connected Lakeview to the Warner Valley ranches, crossing ancient Lake Chewaucan’s dry bed and climbing through juniper-studded hills where Paiute hunting camps once dotted the landscape. The route passes Hart Mountain’s western slopes and drops into the Warner Valley’s vast hay meadows, where century-old homesteads still operate as working cattle ranches.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though mud can be an issue during spring melt and summer thunderstorms. Best traveled April through October when the road’s maintained. No permits required, but respect private ranch land and close gates. Dispersed camping allowed on BLM sections, with excellent stargazing in this designated Dark Sky area. Fuel up in Lakeview – Plush has limited services and the nearest gas is 50+ miles in any direction.
