Svínoy Island Track — Svínoyar to Hvannasund Ferry via East Coast Cliffside
Cliff-edge track, tidal fury below.
Svínoy is one of the Faroe Islands’ more remote populated islands, linked to the main group by ferry from Hvannasund. The track that runs from the village of Svínoyar across the island’s interior and down to the ferry landing is brief but brutal — carved into hillsides above cliffs that drop sheer into the tidal races of Svínoyarfjørður, notorious among local fishermen as among the most dangerous stretches of water in the archipelago. The route crosses open heathland with no windbreak whatsoever; gusts exceeding 60 mph are not unusual, and the track surface alternates between loose gravel and exposed bedrock ledges. The lighthouse at the island’s east point is a worthy waypoint.
With a total population under 20 people, you are genuinely on your own out here. The track demands high clearance and 4WD — a short-wheelbase vehicle is significantly more manageable on the tighter cliff-edge sections. There is no fuel on the island, no accommodation, and the ferry schedule from Hvannasund is limited, so missing it means a very long wait or a satellite phone call. Best driven in summer when ferry frequency increases. This one is for the overlanders who actually mean it when they say they want remote.
