Potato Creek FSR to Windy Pass — Elk Valley Backcountry
Rocky ledges, big Rockies, zero crowds.
Out of Sparwood, the Potato Creek FSR climbs fast and doesn’t apologize for it. This route winds up through dense lodgepole pine before breaking into open subalpine terrain as you push toward Windy Pass — a col that sits just under 2,100 metres and rewards you with panoramic views of the Flathead Range and the ridgelines bleeding into Montana. The crux comes roughly two-thirds of the way up where a series of exposed rocky shelves and off-camber switchbacks demand focused line selection and a spotter if you’re running wide tires. Don’t blow past the creek crossings lower down in early season — they bite.
This is a genuine high-clearance, four-low route. You’ll want a capable rig with a minimum 8-inch clearance, lockers help on the upper ledges, and a skid plate underneath is non-negotiable. Best window is late July through early September — snow lingers on the pass well into summer. Fuel in Sparwood before you leave; the nearest pump from the trailhead is a long slide back down. Cell service drops to nothing past the first creek. Dispersed camping available in the lower valley, and the solitude up top is the real payoff.
