Culebra Island Mosquito Bay Coastal Circuit
Island military ruins and hidden beach circuit.
This backcountry loop cuts across Culebra’s spine from Dewey to the abandoned Navy bombing ranges, passing concrete bunkers and rusted artillery before dropping to pristine Mosquito Bay. The route follows old military roads through thorny scrub forest, with washouts and loose limestone creating technical challenges as you navigate toward the island’s remote eastern shore. At the halfway point, you’ll reach the remains of Camp Roosevelt, where concrete foundations and a collapsed water tower mark the island’s WWII history.
Moderate difficulty with some tricky limestone sections requiring careful tire placement and momentum management. Any high-clearance vehicle works, but 4WD helps with the steeper climbs out of ravines. Dry season (December-April) is ideal — summer heat can be brutal, and hurricane season brings flash flood risk to the coastal sections. Fuel and water are limited on Culebra, so come prepared. The reward is pristine beaches and snorkeling spots that most tourists never find.
