Sumter National Forest Rocky Gap Military Heritage Road

Revolutionary roads with Confederate bridges

Moderate

This 12.3-mile historic route connects Rocky Gap to Burrell’s Ford via a network of old military roads used during both the Revolutionary War and Civil War. The trail begins near the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River boundary and follows Crane Creek through a series of hand-laid stone bridges built by Confederate engineers in 1864. Mile markers include the site of Pickens’ 1782 winter encampment and several Civil War earthworks still visible in the understory. The technical highlight comes at mile 8.5 where you’ll ford War Woman Creek at the ruins of a gristmill that supplied both armies.

Suitable for stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles with decent approach angles for the creek crossings. Spring offers wildflowers and manageable water levels, though summer can bring flash floods. No permits needed, and primitive camping is allowed at designated spots near the old encampment sites. This route offers legitimate history without the crowds — you’ll walk in the boot prints of Revolutionary soldiers while tackling stream crossings that would challenge any modern 4×4. Perfect for history buffs who want their heritage with a side of adventure.
