Oconee State Park CCC Fire Tower Circuit
CCC fire tower circuit through technical granite country
Built by Civilian Conservation Corps crews in the 1930s, this technical mountain circuit links three abandoned fire towers scattered across Oconee State Park’s most rugged terrain. The route climbs steep granite faces where Model A Fords once hauled supplies to lookout posts, threading between massive boulders and following ridgelines that offer glimpses into North Carolina’s Blue Ridge. Hidden Branch Falls tumbles 40 feet down a granite chute halfway through the circuit, accessible only by a technical spur that tests approach angles and requires careful spotting through house-sized rocks.
This is difficult terrain demanding experienced drivers with well-built rigs—stock vehicles need not apply. Skid plates, rock sliders, and 33-inch tires minimum for the granite ledges and off-camber sections. Late fall through early spring avoids summer’s brutal heat and reduces wasp activity around the old towers. Primitive camping available at designated spots with fire rings built by the same CCC crews. Come prepared for recovery situations and bring a full day—this loop rewards patience with some of South Carolina’s most dramatic mountain scenery.
