Sumter National Forest Chattooga Ridge ORV Trail

Technical ridge running above the wild Chattooga.

Difficult

The Chattooga Ridge ORV Trail represents the Forest Service’s attempt to concentrate off-road traffic away from sensitive river corridors while still providing technical challenges. This 18-mile network follows the spine of ridges above the famous Chattooga River, offering glimpses of the wild water below through hardwood canopy. The trail connects multiple difficulty loops, with the eastern section featuring rock ledges and steep climbs that separate casual riders from committed wheelers. Burrell’s Ford serves as the primary access point.

Difficulty ranges from moderate to expert depending on loop selection, with some sections requiring significant ground clearance and aggressive tread patterns. The technical rock sections can be brutal on sidewalls and differentials. Open year-round, but spring and fall provide the most comfortable temperatures for extended riding. Forest Service ORV permits required—purchase online or at nearby ranger stations. Designated camping areas available at Burrell’s Ford, with primitive sites scattered along the ridge system. This is legitimate technical terrain that rewards skill and punishes overconfidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler or 4Runner run Chattooga Ridge, or does it need mods?

Stock rigs will struggle here. The rocky surface and technical sections demand at minimum a lift, all-terrain tires, and skid plates. A locker front or rear makes a real difference on the tighter rock moves.

When does the trail typically close, and is it accessible in winter?

Best window is March through November. Winter can bring ice, mud closures, and USFS seasonal gates — check with the Andrew Pickens Ranger District before making the drive out to Mountain Rest.

Do you need a permit to run Chattooga Ridge ORV Trail?

Yes, a permit is required. Contact the Sumter National Forest / Andrew Pickens Ranger District directly or check the official USFS recreation page for current permit requirements and any fees before you go.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?

The exposed rocky ridge sections are where rigs get tested — loose rock, off-camber ledges, and limited room for error. Take your time on the ridge runs, have a spotter, and don't let momentum make your decisions for you.

Is there water available on trail, and how's cell service if something goes wrong?

Cell service is spotty at best out here — don't count on it for navigation or emergency calls. Bring all the water you need; there's no reliable potable water on trail. A satellite communicator is worth its weight on an 18-mile technical loop this remote.
