Loess Hills Pioneer Ridge Backcountry Route

Unique windblown ridge traverse in prairie country

Difficult

Iowa’s Loess Hills rise like a miniature mountain range from the Missouri River bottomland, and the Pioneer Ridge Backcountry Route follows the spine of these ancient wind-blown deposits for 24 miles of surprisingly technical terrain. Starting from the Preparation Canyon State Park entrance, this route immediately climbs 400 feet on loose, powdery loess soil that turns to axle-deep mud when wet. The technical crux comes at Mile 12 where you’ll negotiate Broken Kettle Grade, a 35-degree descent down switchbacks carved into unstable hillside that’s claimed more than a few bumpers over the years.

Don’t let Iowa fool you – this route demands serious respect and a capable rig with low-range gearing and aggressive tires for the loose climbs. Summer is brutal with zero shade and temps over 100°F, making spring and fall the sweet spots when wildflowers paint the prairie and visibility extends for miles. No permits required, but camping is limited to designated areas in Preparation Canyon State Park. What you get is some of the most unique geology in the Midwest and bragging rights for conquering terrain that looks more like Montana than Iowa.
