Provincial Road 382 — Ashern to Waterhen via Interlake Prairie Backroads

Flat, wild, and wetter than it looks.

Easy

Provincial Road 382 runs northwest out of Ashern through the Interlake — that wide, flat slab of Manitoba pinched between Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg — toward the Waterhen River delta country. The route is largely gravel-maintained but the side spurs heading toward Lake Manitoba’s east shore and the Waterhen Marsh Wildlife Management Area are where it earns its keep. The Waterhen Marsh is one of the largest managed wetlands in Canada, and the access roads probing its edges can turn spectacularly rough after any meaningful rainfall, with deep clay ruts and sections that drain poorly due to the near-dead-flat terrain. The payoff is legitimate: thousands of waterfowl, white pelicans stacked on every sandbar, and the eerie vastness of Lake Manitoba’s northern shallows visible at the end of mud-caked two-tracks.

The main PR 382 corridor is driveable in most 2WD trucks in summer, but the WMA spurs demand a high-clearance 4×4 and good recovery gear — a stuck vehicle here means a long wait for help. The Interlake is notorious for black flies and mosquitoes from May through July, so plan accordingly. Fuel in Ashern before departure; Waterhen has limited services. No formal permit needed for WMA access on designated roads. Best window is August through September when ground is firmest and insects have thinned out.
