Provincial Road 278 — Dauphin Lake to Gilbert Plains via Parkland Upland Backroads

Parkland sky country — big views, zero crowds.

Easy

PR 278 and its connecting gravel spurs run the ridge country north of Dauphin Lake between the Riding Mountain uplands and the Duck Mountain foothills — a largely overlooked overland corridor that rewards anyone willing to get off the paved ring roads of the Parkland Region. The drive from the Dauphin Lake shore north and east toward Gilbert Plains rolls through mixed-grass uplands, aspen bluffs, and a patchwork of sloughs and wetlands that the waterfowl hunters know well but overlanders typically skip. The Vermilion River valley crossing is a notable dip — clay banks, a low-water bridge that sees sheet water across it in spring — and the high ground just north gives you a sweeping view west toward Duck Mountain’s dark timber horizon.

This is a moderate gravel run in dry conditions — suitable for a capable AWD wagon or a stock 4×4 — but the clay-heavy soil turns genuinely greasy after rain and has swallowed trucks that looked fine on paper. No permits needed. Fuel in Dauphin before heading out; Gilbert Plains has a gas station at the far end. Best May through October, though midsummer gives you the slough reflection and wildflower show that makes the Parkland worth photographing. Cell coverage is thin throughout. Dispersed camping on crown land margins is possible with standard Manitoba rules applying.
