Nahanni Range Road South — Watson Lake to Flat Lakes Basin
Selwyn Mountains solitude — earn every kilometre.
Watson Lake is the jumping-off point and the last place you’ll see pavement for a long time. The Nahanni Range Road punches north from the Alaska Highway near here, but the southern approach into the Flat Lakes Basin is the section that filters the casual trucks from the serious rigs. You’re crossing the Liard River drainage, threading through black spruce muskeg, and climbing into the Selwyn Mountains — one of the most isolated ranges in North America. The Flat Lakes sit in a high basin that was prospected for tungsten and base metals for decades. Evidence of that history is scattered across the landscape. River crossings are real here — expect at least three unbridged fords of creek tributaries that can run thigh-deep in early season.
Do not run this solo and do not run it without a snatch block, high-lift jack, and a full-size spare. A capable built rig — lifted, lockers, all-terrain or mud tires — is the minimum. This is not a trail for stock vehicles regardless of how confident you feel in Watson Lake. Fuel range from Watson Lake must cover at least 200 km round trip before any resupply. Cell service ends before you leave town. Best window is late June through August. The payoff is absolute solitude in mountain country that sees fewer visitors per year than most people have in their contact list.
